Nanotechnology & Materials Science

ICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoci obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) in ion selective electrodes. Since 1992 he has carried out research as postdoctoral fellow and research professor at the Polytechnic University of Budapest (Hungary), University of Ioannina (Greece), Universita degli Studi di Padova (Italy), Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and New Mexico State University (USA). His research is focused on the integration of biological molecules and other species with micro- and nanostructures to design novel (bio)sensors. He is member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania and director and coordinator of NANOALB (www.nanoalb.al), the regional network of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Prof. Merkoçi is Co-Editor in Chief of Biosensors and Bioelectronics, the principal international journal devoted to research, design development and application of biosensors and bioelectronics, member of editorial board of Electroanalysis, Microchimica Acta and other journals. Prof. Merkoçi has published 353 articles (H-index / citations: Google Scholar 91 / 32689; WOS 81 / 25064) and supervised 40 finished PhD theses. He is also involved in teaching PhD courses in the field of nanomaterial- based biosensors in several Spanish and international centres. He has been a member of the commission for establishing the new Nanoscience and Nanotechnology undergraduate academic curriculum at the UAB, the first one in Spain, which started during the academic year 2010- 2011. He is a member of the Academics Working Group of BIST and coordinator of the Nanodiagnostics module of the Nanotechnology Master at the UAB. He has got several national and international grants related to nanomaterials application in biosensors and his group is collaborating with several worldwide leading labs in the field of nanobiosensors. Prof. Merkoçi serves also as scientific evaluator and member of panels of experts of various international governmental and nongovernmental agencies (EU-FP and EU-ERC panels and other panels in Europe, USA and other countries), as a scientific committee member of many international congresses, director of several workshops and other scientific events and have been invited to give plenary lectures, keynote and invited speeches in more than 220 occasions in various countries. Prof. Merkoçi is the co-founder of two spin-off companies: GraphenicaLab, devoted to graphene patterning, and PaperDrop, dedicated to clinical diagnostics.

Masahiro YOSHIMURA was graduated for B.S. at 1965, M.S. at 1967 and D. Sc. in Engineering at 1970 from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Then 1970, Research Assoc.,1978 Assoc. Prof. ,1985 Full Prof. in Materials and Structures Laboratory, Tokyo Institute of Technology. Res., CAS, China, . then National Cheng Kung Univ., Taiwan since Feb. 2010 as a Visiting Distinguished Chair Prof.,as the Director of PCGMR,Hi-Gem member and NCKU90 and Beyond projects. MARTIN SCHMAL is professor since 1970, became Full Professor in 1985 and Emeritus since 2008 at the Chemical Engineering Department of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and actually professor at the University of São Paulo since 2014 – He graduated Chemical Engineering at the Engineering Faculty of the Catholic University of S. Dr. Leon L. Shaw is Rowe Family Endowed Chair Professor in Sustainable Energy and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is the founding director of NSF Center of All-Solid-State Batteries. Dr. Shaw has extensive experience in nanomaterials synthesis and processing for applications in structural materials, hydrogen storage, Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, and solid-state batteries. He has authored and co-authored more than 320 archival refereed publications in these areas. Among these 300+ publications 238 are journal articles and invited chapters for books and encyclopedias. His publications have been cited more than 14,700 times with h-index of 64 and i10-index of 208 (according to Google Scholar). His publications are ranked top 1.4% citations for career-long impact among all scientific fields and top 0.2% citations for career-long impact in the subfield of “materials” (based on the composite score c compiled by Elsevier). His accomplishments are recognized worldwide with many honors and awards, including “Scientist Medal” in 2024 and “Energy Award” in 2018 presented by International Association of Advanced Materials, and “Researchers to Know in 2020” recognized by Illinois Science & Technology Coalition. Dr. Shaw is a Member of EU Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of International Association of Advanced Materials, a Fellow of ASM International, a Fellow of the World Academy of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, and a Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering.

Prof. Mohamed Khayet is director of the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM) Research Group “Membranes and Renewable Energies (MER)”, Full Professor (Applied Physics Area) at the Faculty of Physical Sciences (UCM) (Department of Structure of Matter, Thermal Physics and Electronics). He got his Ph.D. (1997) in Physics from the UCM. Since then, he realized various research stays in various international institutions (Industrial Membrane Research Institute in Ottawa, Canada; Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology in Warsaw, Poland; Centre for Clean Water Technologies at the University of Nottingham in UK; Singapore Membrane Technology Centre, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Yale University in New Haven, USA; University of California Berkeley in USA, etc.). Among other grants, he got the Fulbright Grant (2019, Yale University, USA). He is an expert in the field of membrane science, nanotechnology, renewable energies and water treatment. He has coordinated various national and international projects funded by different institutions (European Union, Middle East Desalination Research Centre, Spanish Ministries; Companies such as Abengoa, etc.) and participated in other projects in collaboration with different national and international institutions (over 40). He published over 200 papers in international journals, filed various Patents and published 5 books in the field of membrane science and technology. He also published various chapters in books. Among other recognitions, he received the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) in 2012. He edited various special issues in international journals such as Desalination, J. Membrane Science and Research, Polymers and Membranes. He was Editor of the international Journal “Desalination” from January 2018 until December 2022. Previously he served as associated editor of “Desalination” during the year 2017, “Water and Desalination Research Journal” and “Journal of Applied Water Science”. Professor Vladimir G. Chigrinov is Professor of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology since 1999. He is an Expert in Flat Panel Technology in Russia, recognized by the World Technology Evaluation Centre, 1994, and SID Fellow since 2008. He is an author of 6 books, 31 reviews and book chapters, about 333 journal papers, more than 718 Conference presentations, and 121 patents and patent applications including 50 US patents in the field of liquid crystals since 1974. He got Excellent Research Award of HKUST School of Engineering in 2012. He obtained Gold Medal and The Best Award in the Invention & Innovation Awards 2014 held at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2014, which was hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 20-22 Feb 2014. He is a Member of EU Academy of Sciences (EUAS) since July 2017. He got A Slottow Owaki Prize of SID in 2018 He is 2019 Distinguished Fellow of IETI (International Engineering and Technology Institute). Paulo C. He is known for his research in preparation, characterization and applications of nanosized materials (magnetic fluid, magnetoliposome, magnetic nanoemulsion, magnetic nanocapsule, magnetic nanofilm, magnetic nanocomposite, nanosized semiconductors, polymeric dots, carbon dots, and graphene quantum dots). With more than 500 published papers in peer reviewed journals, more than 13,000 citations, more than 200 international invited talks, and more than 15 filed patents, He has appeared in recent World ranking of top scientists, such as 2020-Stanford, 2022-Research.com, 2023-AD Scientific Index, 2023-Research.com, 2024- Elsevier, and 2025-AD Scientific Index.

Andre RTS Araujo graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto in 2005, where he also obtained his European PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Analytical Chemistry) in 2011. He is Assistant Professor at the School of Health Sciences of Institute Polytechnic of Guarda (Guarda, Portugal) since 2011. He is the Director of the Pharmacy Degree since 2018. He is a member of the LAQV/REQUIMTE, Department of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy University of Porto (Porto, Portugal) and collaborator of UDI-IPG, Research Unit for Inland Development, Polytechnic Institute of Guarda (Guarda, Portugal). His research activities have been focused on the development of enzyme-based automated methodologies in different application fields, ranging from clinical to environmental ones. Currently, he works on the development, characterization and quality control of cosmeceuticals and in the development, optimization and validation of analytical methods for the determination of analytes in different matrices.

Elvira Fortunato, currently the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal (30th March 2022-…), was Vice‐Rector at Nova University since September 2017-2022, Director of the Materials Research Center (CENIMAT) and the integrated Associate Laboratory i3N, the Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodeling and Nanofabrication (The only Portuguese research centre (1998-2022) classified as Exceptional in the Advanced Materials and Nanotechnologies area in the last national evaluation); Invited Professor at Universidade Federal de Lavras, Brazil (2013-2022). She has held other Institutional Responsibilities, such as, Deputy Director of FCT NOVA (2014-17); Coordinator of Research Centers of FCT NOVA (2006-17); Member of the Executive Board of the Materials Science Department (2009-17); Coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology, FCT NOVA (2009-18); Member of the Scientific Committee of the PhD Program in Biomaterials (UFLA, Brasil) (2014-2022). Participation in several academic examination referees board (PhD juries in and abroad Portugal). She has received her Bachelor´s degree in Physics and Materials Engineering in 1987, obtaining, in 1995, the PhD in Microelectronics and Optoelectronics. Elvira Fortunato pioneered European research on transparent electronics, namely thin-film transistors based on oxide semiconductors, demonstrating that oxide materials may be used as true semiconductors. She is co-inventor of the paper electronics concept worldwide: Paper-e®. In 2008 she wins an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the project “Invisible” and in 2018 she received the second one ERC, with the amount of € 3.5 million. The project is entitled "Multifunctional Digital Materials Platform for Smart Integrated Applications | DIGISMART". Her research team is exploring novel active properties in advanced and sustainable multifunctional materials, including oxides as well as novel electronic-active materials including alternative deposition methods, with the main objective of developing eco-friendly technologies and devices to be used and exploited in electronic circuits made of stable amorphous semiconductors able to serve large area smart flexible and conformable surface electronics. She has been distinguished with several National and International Prizes, among those it is worth mentioning the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, in 2009, by University of Galati, and the denomination of Grand Officer of Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, acknowledged by the President of the Republic of Portugal in 2010, the Blaise Pascal Medal conferred by the European Academy of Sciences, 2016, the Czochralski Medal (Science of Materials) assigned by the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2017, Award women of the year Science Category LUX in 2018, and the Honourable Mention of the Scientific Prize of City of Almada in 2019. The most recent awards are: - In September 2020, received the European Commision's Horizon Impact Award 2020; - Winner of the 2020 Pessoa Award (March 2021); - The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) GREE Women in Engineering Award 2020 (08th April 2021); - Gold Medal Human Rights 2020 Award recognition granted by the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal (07th July 2021). She is an elected member of: Academy of Engineering (2008); European Academy of Sciences (2016); Lisbon Academy of Sciences (2017) and Academia Europaea (2019). She is coordinating since 2019 at NOVA University the SPEAR project, an European platform for supporting and implementing plans for gender equality in academia and research. Dr. Lu Wang now is engaged as a postdoctoral fellow at Shandong University, interested in structural regulations of bismuth-based materials and the related mechanisms, to develop secondary alkali metal ion batteries, such as potassium ion batteries and lithium-sulfur batteries, etc. with high-specific energy, high-stable and high practical prospects. Up to now, he has published about 30 SCI papers, among which he co-authored as the first author/corresponding author for 10 papers published on Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., Adv. Funct. Mater., Energy Storage Mater., J. Mater. Chem. A and other internationally renowned journals, with a H index of 19. Dr. Lu Wang has been also invited as reviewer for J. Mater. Chem. A and other journals, and acts as a guest editor for Materials (SCIE; IF 3.1, Q1). He won the first prize of National Equipment Management and technology innovation achievement (second rank), Gold Award Mentor in "2023 China International College Students Innovation Competition", and the Excellent Mentor in "Internet +" College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition of Shandong Province, China.

Dr. Sergio Carrasco (38 years; H=13, 4 book chapters, 1 patent, 22 papers (19 Q1), 6 as corresponding author; >700 citations, 110 cit./year 2020-2024) has a multidisciplinary background with a broad experience in the synthesis and characterisation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for sensing and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalysis. He is a postdoctoral researcher at IMDEA Energy, in the Advanced Porous Materials Unit, where he leads the green H2 generation and CO2 valorisation research lines. In 2017, he received the best thesis awards by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, Applied Spectroscopy Society and Complutense University, and he has participated in 57 congresses (36 international) with 7 invited keynotes. He has an extensive experience in the MOF field within the last 7 years (25 MOF phases, 7 new, based on porphyrins, phthalocyanines, squaryls and anthraquinones). During his postdoctoral stay in Sweden (7 publications, 3 years), he specialised in the microwave assisted synthesis and characterisation of MOFs as catalysts: new C-C, C-N and C=N bonds, and CO2 valorisation, that continued during his MSCA project (as PI). Member of 2 regional, 8 national and 6 international projects related to catalytic MOFs for green solar fuels and other CO2 valorisation reactions. Supervision includes 2 BSc, 3 MSc and 4 PhD students, 2 international visiting researchers and 5 internships.

Since 2017, Dr. Pérez is Professor (Profesora Titular) at Rey Juan Carlos University, and since 2020, she is Senior Assistant Researcher in the group of Dr. Patricia Horcajada (Advanced Porous Materials Unit) at IMDEA Energy Institute (Excellence Center María de Maeztu). She has an extensive knowledge in the fields of Nanomaterials, Catalysis/Photocatalysis, Photovoltaic devices and Lubricating oils. She is currently focused on the development of multifunctional materials (e.g. lead-free perovskites, MOFs and composites) to address varios social concerns, including performing chemical processes using clean energy and for environmental remediation. Dr. Pérez has been the PI of one research project for knowledge transfer, with the company Repsol S.A. (06/2014-09/2016). Currently she is the co-IP of two research projects. Dr. Pérez has participated in 21 research projects and has published nearly 60 scientific papers in high-impact international journals indexed in JCR (h-index of 18). She has been recognized for 24 years of international-quality research (4 sexenios). Her training experience includes supervising 21 BSc students , 2 MSc students, 2 collaboration grants and 3 students of external work experience and 4 PhD students (3 ongoing).

Dr. George A. Stanciu, is Professor of Physics at University Politehnica of Bucharest. Starting with 1973 he has been working in the Laser Scanning Microscopy field. In 1977 his team reported the first Digital Laser Scanning Microscope: (System for investigation of the semiconductor devices and the integrated devices by using laser scanning microscopy, G.A.Stanciu and C.M.Stoichita, Bul. Instit. Polit. XXXIX, 4, pp11-14, 1977). The system was the subject of Romanian patent no. 995574 (System for studying semiconductor materials and semiconductor devices -1978). He is head of Center for Microscopy-Microanalysis and Information Processing founded by him in 2001. He got his Doctor degree (Ph. D.) in Technical Physics in 1981. He received the Professor title in 1994. Currently he acts as professor of Quantum Mechanics in Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology. Starting with 1973 he has been working in the Laser Scanning Microscopy field. In 1977 his team reported the first Digital Laser Scanning Microscope in the world. His research has been mainly in the field of laser scanning microscopy techniques and their applications in the fields of Life Sciences and Materials Science. Dr. George Stanciu was Visiting Professor at more than 20 Universities from Europe, USA, Asia and Australia. His research activities have been supported by over 50 national and international research grants. Dr. George Stanciu published more than 120 ISI papers and presented more than 40 invited lectures at international conferences. Currently is focused on researches related to near field instrumentation and application. Prof. George Stanciu is Senior member of the IEEE from 1995.

Ph.D. in Chemistry/Inorganic Chemistry with a thesis project entitled: "Synthesis of new organometallic materials with non-linear optical properties" from the University of Lisbon (Portugal) in 1999. He has been, since 1999, Assistant Professor at the UMa - University of Madeira (Madeira Islands/Portugal) and, since 2022, Assistant Professor with habilitation responsible for the areas of inorganic/organometallic chemistry, nanochemistry, and nanomaterials. João Rodrigues is the Director of CQM-Centro de Química da Madeira/Madeira Chemistry Research Centre (National Research Laboratory, FCT –UID674), University of Madeira, Madeira Island, Portugal. From 2017 until 2020, he was a Visitant Professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering/Center for Nano Energy Materials, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an, China. From 2017 until 2020, he belonged to the Scientific Board of Exact Sciences and Engineering from the Portuguese National Science Foundation (FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). In June 2018, he integrated the Steering Committee of the Portugal-China Joint Innovation Centre for Advanced Materials (PCJICAM). In the same year, in August, he was nominated invited Member of the international board of 111 Project - Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Scientific Innovation for Fiber Materials, from the State Key Laboratory for Modification of Chemical Fibers and Polymer Materials (SKLFPM), Donghua University, Shanghai, China. Joanna Depciuch holds a PhD in Physical Sciences (2017) and a habilitation in Medical Sciences (2023). She works in the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Science in the Department of Functional Nanomaterials and in Medical University in Lublin. She is a co-author of over 130 scientific publications in journals with an Impact Factor (IF). She has H-index = 31. Her research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of metallic and oxide nanoparticles for biomedical and catalytic applications. She employs transmission electron microscopy, holotomographic microscopy, and spectroscopic methods (Raman, FTIR, XAS) in her studies. She uses synchrotron techniques to analyze changes in the oxidation states of oxide nanoparticles, which are used as precursors for catalytic nanoparticles during the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). She conducts both post-mortem and operando XAS studies. Additionally, she applies synchrotron techniques to investigate structural changes in phosphorus incorporated into biological membranes due to nanoparticle-cell interactions.

Svetlana Neretina is a Professor in the Departments of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry & Biochemistry (concurrent) at the University of Notre Dame. Her current research focuses on the synthesis and fabrication of substrate-based nanomaterials using exotic growth modes that integrate liquid- and vapor-phase epitaxy, directed- and self-assembly, lithographic methods, and light-driven pathways. Dr. Neretina has authored or coauthored more than 58 peer-reviewed journal articles. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2016, she was an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Temple University where in 2011 she received the NSF CAREER Award. Dr. Neretina carried out postdoctoral work at the Georgia Institute of Technology on semiconductor-plasmonic systems using ultrafast laser spectroscopy and Ph.D. work at McMaster University, Canada on the growth of thin films and nanomaterials using pulsed laser deposition. She is a member of the Material Research Society (MRS) and American Chemical Society (ACS).

Carola Esposito Corcione received her Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Technology in May 2004, from University of Salento (Italy). From January 2005 she is Assistant Professor at University of Salento and from January 2022 she is associate Professor. Her research interest focuses on the rheological, thermal and transport properties of innovative polymeric materials and in particular of polymer based nano-composites, bio-polymers, largely employed in industrial applications (such as coatings, solar energy materials, automotive, medical, additive manufacturing, circular economy, reuse and recycle) focusing on the relationship between processing, structure and properties. She is author of about 160 papers on international journals, 100 presentations at international conferences and 4 patents (hindex 37).

Carina Aline Prado holds a PhD in Industrial Biotechnology from the Lorena School of Engineering (EEL) at USP. Her thesis, defended in 2023 and supervised by Prof. Júlio César dos Santos, was awarded in the 19th edition of the CAPES Thesis Award in 2024 and in the 3rd Edition of the Nova Dimensão International Award, which highlights women in research. The study developed new technological alternatives for sugarcane bagasse biorefineries, using oxidative pretreatment assisted by hydrodynamic cavitation, in addition to sequential and simultaneous hydrolysis and fermentation processes. Carina began her academic career in Chemical Engineering at USP, after working in the pharmaceutical industry (Sanofi) and, during her master's degree, obtained four patents for the development of methods for treating pharmaceutical effluents. During her doctorate, she published 16 scientific articles and collaborated with international institutions, such as the Technical University of Denmark. In addition, she taught in Mexico and is currently doing her postdoctoral studies at EEL-USP, in addition to collaborating with the Federal University of Viçosa and acting as a guest professor at the UFBRA University Center in São José dos Campos. Her work seeks sustainable solutions for the production of biofuels, such as second-generation ethanol, and natural sweeteners, such as xylitol, optimizing industrial processes, nanolignin and reducing costs.

Dr. Meltem Yanilmaz has her expertise in synthesizing and characterizing nanostructured materials for energy storage. Dr. Meltem Yanilmaz has a PhD in Fiber and Polymer Science from NCSU. Currently, she is an associate professor at Istanbul Technical University, where she focuses on synthesizing energy storage materials for rechargeable batteries. She has published over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals, which have received over 4,000 citations.

Clarissa Olivati is an Associate Professor at São Paulo State University (Unesp) – Presidente Prudente, Brazil, specializing in Physics and Materials Science. Her research focuses on functional materials for organic devices, particularly conductive polymers and nanostructured materials. She has expertise in Langmuir-Blodgett ultrathin films, optoelectronic devices, and the electrical and optical characterization of organic and hybrid systems. She actively collaborates on interdisciplinary projects in materials science, nanotechnology, and applied physics, aiming to develop advanced materials for sensor technologies and environmental monitoring.

Dr. Wajood A. Diery is an Associate Professor in the Physics Department at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She earned her Ph.D. in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. With over two decades of experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, she has made significant contributions to physics education and research. In 2015, Dr. Diery was awarded the prestigious Ibn Khaldun Fellowship for Saudi Arabian Women, which enabled her to spend two years as a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Her research and academic collaborations during this period further strengthened her expertise in the field. Dr. Diery’s research focuses on two-dimensional (2D) materials, particularly transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), for a range of applications, including gas sensing. Through theoretical and computational studies, she explores the electronic and structural properties of these materials, aiming to enhance their performance in environmental and industrial applications.

Élia Roldão is an Assistant Professor in the Conservation and Restoration Department and a researcher at LAQV-REQUIMTE, both at NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She holds a Ph.D. in Conservation and Restoration of Heritage (2018) from FCT NOVA. Since 2000, she has been actively involved in the conservation and restoration of photographs, with her research focusing on the development of innovative and sustainable approaches for the preservation of photographs in both public and private collections. Recently, her work has concentrated on mixed-media photographic artworks. Élia has been a team member and researcher in five funded projects (three Portuguese and two European) focused on the preservation and conservation of photographic heritage. Throughout these projects, she has had the privilege of working with multidisciplinary teams along with curators, art historians, conservation scientists, among others. Since 2011, she has been lecturing at some of the most prestigious Portuguese universities, including FCT NOVA, Universidade Católica, and Universidade Lusófona. Currently, she teaches courses on Photo-documentation, Diagnosis and Conservation of Photography and Other Records, and Conservation and Restoration of Photographs at DCR NOVA. She is also a supervisor for Master's and Ph.D. theses in the field of conservation and restoration of photographs.

Jonas Deuermeier is Staff Researcher at i3N/CENIMAT and head of the Surface Analysis Laboratory. He has a joint doctoral degree from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal and the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. His research is focused on the development of novel memristive devices and the advanced characterization of interface properties by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Dr Maria A. Goula is Professor of Catalysis at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Western Macedonia and Director of the Laboratory of Environmental Catalysis and Alternative Fuels (LAFEC). She is also a collaborating member at the Hellenic Open University for the ‘Catalysis & Protection of the Environment’ MSc program. Prof. Goula obtained her Diploma (Chemistry) in 1987 and her Ph.D (Catalysis) in 1993 from the University of Patras. From 1993 – 2000 she worked as a research fellow at the CPERI/CERTH. Her research interests focus on Heterogeneous and Environmental Catalysis, Catalysts’ Synthesis, Surface Characterization, Hydrogen, Syn Gas and Bio-Fuels Production, Sustainable Biomass Utilization and Air Pollution Control Technologies. She is author of more than 70 papers in peer reviewed international journals and 205 proceeding papers in international (139) and national (66) peer reviewed conferences. Her research work has been cited over 2540 times and her H index is 26. She acts as reviewer for more than 100 scientific journals. She has supervised 7 Ph.D and over 30 MSc awarded studies. She has participated in 7 inter. projects and 18 national projects (Coordinator in 5). She has also been awarded two (2) industrial contracts. She has been Head of Department (2004-2008), and Vice-Head (2008-2012, 2014-2016, 2019-Present), Vice Dean of the School of Technological Applications (2007-2008), Lab. Director (2004-Present), and member of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation board (2018-2020).

Asal Kiazadeh, PhD in Electronics and Optoelectronics, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nova de Lisboa, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Materials Science. She is the Team Leader at CENIMAT | i3N - Resistive Switching Technologies for Neuromorphic and RF Solutions. She has a proven track record of securing five project grants as a Principal Investigator and leading member, funded by both national government agencies and the European Commission. Her projects focus on memristor technology for communication applications, such as THz-operating non-volatile RF switches, and computational domains, including neuromorphic vision and brain-inspired low-power neural network hardware.

Caterina Ricci is currently working at the University of Milan in the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Translational Medicine, as a researcher in the Biophysics and Soft matter group. She deals with the structural characterization of complex self-aggregating systems and the study of their physical properties, mainly with spectroscopy techmiques(light, x-rays, neutrons). The experimental activity is carried out both in house and at international Large Scale Facilities (synchrotrons and neutron sources). In collaboration with chemical and pharmaceuticals groups she characterizes drug delivery systems, nanosystems for biomedical applications, tissue regeneration and niosomes and nanoemulsions. Magnetic materials are being explored from both therapeutic and bioengineering perspectives.
